Vaping on the Go: Everything You Need to Know

Essential Travel Tips for Vapers

Traveling can be exhilarating and hectic all at the same time. Staying organized is key: keeping documents handy, packing everything you need, grabbing the correct charging cords for all of your electronics, and hiring a great dog sitter to watch Spot while you're away. No one really enjoys standing in lines at the airport or going through security, but it's a measure we must all endure to protect ourselves and others while flying. Now throw in the added aspect of being a vaper, and it's another obstacle altogether.

Can I bring my device with me on vacation? Will I be able to vape while on board? How do I get my liquids safely to their destination? I can't function without my supplies! Pause the panic button, these are all valid and very common concerns regarding traveling as a vaper. We have compiled a list of popular airlines and their individual rules on traveling with devices and e-liquid as well as statements from the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) on everything vape related to help soften the load.

DELTA AIRLINES:

"Battery-powered portable electronic smoking devices (e.g., e-cigarettes, e-cigs, e-cigars, e-pipes, e-hookahs, personal vaporizers, electronic nicotine delivery systems) when carried by passengers or crewmembers for personal use must be carried on one's person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the devices and/or the batteries on board the aircraft is not permitted. We recommend traveling with them in a designated carry case to prevent damage and/or unintentional activation."

"If your travels take you internationally, be mindful that certain countries may restrict and/or completely ban the import, export, or use of electronic cigarettes. Delta Air Lines recommends that you check with the local Customs Authorities regarding entry restrictions prior to beginning your travel. Delta Air Lines is not responsible for items confiscated by local authorities."

AMERICAN AIRLINES:

"Since some electronic cigarettes use lithium ion batteries, you cannot travel with them in your checked baggage. You can travel with them in your carry-on, but you’re not allowed to use them onboard any flight. We recommend traveling with them in a designated carry case."

ALASKA AIRLINES / VIRGIN AMERICA:

"Electronic smoking devices must be set in safety mode to prevent accidental ignition. Battery operated or USB-charged cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or pipes that simulate smoking are CARRY ON ONLY."

UNITED AIRLINES:

"Electronic cigarettes and personal vaporizers are not accepted in checked or gate-checked baggage. These items may be stowed in carry-on baggage or on your person during travel, however, the use and charging of e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers is prohibited onboard all United flights and in United ClubSM locations."

JETBLUE AIRLINES:

"Electronic/smokeless cigarettes must be carried in the cabin and the device must be in the off position and disconnected from the charging system and battery."

HAWAIIAN AIRLINES:

"Electronics that are lithium or lithium-ion battery operated can overheat and cause harm. Electronics that are lithium or lithium-ion battery operated and exceed regulatory limits (http://phmsa.dot.gov/safetravel/batteries) are prohibited, other than (i) permitted assistive devices like wheelchairs or (ii) as an exception stated below: E -cigarettes or electronic smoking devices are prohibited in checked baggage. Exception: Electronic smoking devices shall only be permitted in the passenger’s carry-on baggage."

THE CONSENSUS: Rest easy, you can most definitely take your devices and liquids in your CARRY-ON luggage ONLY as long as you follow the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule put forth by the TSA, and you don't plan to vape or charge your device while in flight. For all International flights, one should contact local Customs Authorities with any questions or concerns.

Let's break it down according to the TSA and the FAA:

The FAA prohibits these devices in checked baggage. Battery-powered E-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems may only be carried in the aircraft cabin (in carry-on baggage or on your person). Check with your airline for additional restrictions. Remove all electronic cigarette and vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate or planeside.

These devices are permitted on planes, but the FAA recently notified airlines that the lithium batteries used in these devices are fire hazards and should not be packed in checked baggage.

WARNING: Lithium batteries must be handled with extreme care. Lithium batteries must be compatible with the device. Installed batteries must not be more powerful than what the device is designed for. Homemade "modified" battery packs–whether installed in a device or carried as a spare–are forbidden on aircraft. Spare (uninstalled) lithium batteries must be placed in carry-on baggage.

If your device does not have a lithium battery, you may pack it in either your checked or carry-on bag.

As far as the liquid used with these devices, they are permitted through security in carry-on bags if they comply with the 3-1-1 policy for liquids. 3-1-1 = 3.4 oz containers or less that fit in a quart-size, zip top, clear plastic bag (one bag per person) and placed in the screening bin.

Pro Tips: Double bag your bottles of Five Pawns Premium E-liquids to reduce any leakage from pressure changes while on board. Take your device apart to get through TSA screening as smoothly as possible, and reassemble it after you go through security. Make sure you disconnect the batteries from the device's atomizers during checkpoint screening. To simplify the entire process, pack your open tank device in your CARRY ON luggage while empty and disassembled and opt for a closed tank device such as the compact Cync with specialized Five Pawns flavor pods.
